Are you a candidate for weight loss surgery?

Do you know how to tell if weight loss surgery is the right weight loss strategy for you?

There are many options available for individuals seeking effective ways to manage their weight, each offering a unique path to a healthier future. Of the options available, weight loss surgery, also commonly known as bariatric surgery, is most effective in terms of delivering proven, long-term results.

The most common types of weight loss surgery are Lap Band (Gastric Band), Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve, each of which is designed to make your stomach smaller and affect how you digest food. The end result of these weight loss surgery options is that the patient can feel full after eating a much smaller than usual amount of food.

Is weight loss surgery for you?

While weight loss procedures such as a gastric sleeve operation, stomach band surgery or gastric bypass surgery provide a proven, lifechanging path to losing excess weight and keeping it off, it isn’t the right option for everyone. Here are three quick considerations that will help you determine whether or not you are an ideal candidate for weight loss surgery.

1. Assess your current health state

Some patients may be too obese for weight loss surgery, while others may not be obese enough to qualify for weight loss surgery. Candidates need to be in good enough shape to manage both the procedure and recovery process, but also heavy enough to justify the surgery in the first place. Candidates also need to be both mentally and physically willing to accept and manage life-changing lifestyle alterations.

2. Are you old enough for weight loss surgery?

The typical industry rule for weight loss surgery is that patients must be at least 18 years old to be a candidate for the procedure. This is because surgeons generally prefer to wait until patients are older before they commit to what is a major, life-changing medical decision.

3. Do you have other health conditions?

If you are currently managing other serious health conditions, such as diabetes, you may be ineligible for weight loss surgery. This is because such conditions may severely increase the risks associated with weight loss surgery – or prevent it from being performed altogether.

These three points are just a start to assessing whether or not you are a candidate to receive the benefits of weight loss surgery. There are a number of other key things to assess when considering weight loss surgery, such as your Body Mass Index (BMI). Your surgeon can help you to assess your new weight loss surgery options to determine whether weight loss surgery is the right option for you.

The benefits of weight loss surgery are many, and while the outcomes can be lifechanging, weight loss surgery isn’t the right option for everyone.
