Frequently asked questions

Will I feel hungry or deprived with the Gastric Band?
The band will make you eat less and feel full for hours. If you follow the nutrition guidelines when making food choices and chew it well, you should not feel hungry or deprived.

What will happen if I become ill?
The band is adjustable and should you require to eat more because of any illness the band can be loosened accordingly.

What about pregnancy?
The band does not affect you or your baby during pregnancy. The probability of falling pregnant actually increases with loss of weight. Should you vomit due to pregnancy, the band can be loosened temporarily.

Will I need to take vitamin supplements?
It is recommended to have vitamin and mineral supplements regularly to avoid any deficiencies in the long term.

What about other medications?
You should be able to take prescribed medications. You may need to use capsules, break big tablets or dissolve them in water so they don’t get stuck in your band.

What if I go out to eat?
Order smaller portions, such as entrées/appetisers. You may want to let your host know that you can only eat small amounts of food.

Can I drink alcohol with a band?
Most alcoholic drinks are very high in calories. Alcohol also breaks down valuable vitamins. An occasional glass of wine or another alcoholic beverage is not considered harmful to weight loss.

Will I suffer from constipation?
There may be some reduction in the volume of your stools. If you develop any problems, you can certainly take Metamucil or a similar medication.

How long will the band last?
No one knows this. However, studies have followed lap band patients for over 12 years without the need for removal

Can the band be removed?
Yes at any time. A simple procedure can be performed to remove the band however it is not recommended as you will certainly regain all the lost weight and possibly more.

Will I develop loose, excessive skin folds? Will I need cosmetic surgery?
About 25% of patients will need some sort of plastic surgical procedure to correct these changes. At Life Weight Loss Centre, we have the necessary expertise to help you with these problems efficiently and at competitive prices.

How much weight can I expect to lose with gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy?
Patients are expected to lose 50-60% of excess weight in gastric banding and 60-70% with sleeve gastrectomy within 2 years of the operation.

What about exercise after surgery?
You should avoid strenuous exercise in the first 4 weeks following surgery. You could start walking though, once you feel comfortable.
